Spirometry
Spirometry
Accurate spirometry is a critical component in diagnosis and treatment. Spirometry is a basic test used to assess static and/or dynamic airflow in the upper and distal airway. Spirometry is extremely important for many reasons, including:
- As an objective assessment of airflow obstruction and restriction
- To further assess symptoms such as cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath
- For the early detection and diagnosis of lung diseased
- For quantitative classification of diagnosed diseases
- As a measurement of patient response to therapy
- To assess change over time
Unfortunately, spirometry is underutilized, especially in the realm of primary care. All too often, this means that care for respiratory illnesses are delayed or that patients are misdiagnosed. In fact, only about 30% of the COPD population is confirmed through spirometry, which is the gold standard internationally.
Even among primary care physicians who utilize spirometry, there are severe quality control issues, including lack of training and skill, ignorance of correct usage guidelines, and poor device maintenance.
Fortunately, the spirometry professionals at CDS are here to help you. The experts at CDS offer hands-on spirometry training with equipment purchase or with individual consultations.
The primary goal is to increase the quality of care provided, and in turn, to increase the quality of life for the patients we serve. At CDS, we work directly with primary care physicians and healthcare organizations to bring spirometry to your patients to maximize pulmonary care.
